Goshen 14-year-olds lose but advance on tiebreaker » Sports » Goshen News, Goshen, IN

MIDDLEBURY — There was good news and bad news for the Goshen 14-year-old All-Stars on Saturday as they wrapped up Pool A play at the state tournament here. The bad news was that they lost to Highlander, 12-1 to fall to 1-2 in pool play. Ordinarily, two wins are needed to advance. The good news was that two other teams in the pool — Chet Waggoner and Brownsburg — also finished 1-2. The tiebreaker to advance to Sunday’s championship bracket came down to runs given up. Goshen gave up fewer runs in its three games, and despite the 12 runs surrendered on Saturday, got the second spot in Sunday’s semifinals. Meanwhile, in Wabash, the Goshen 13-year-old All-Stars advanced to the championship game of their state tournament with a 17-7  victory over Seymour. The 13-year-olds will play at 2 p.m. in Wabash. Back in Middlebury, the Goshen 14-year-olds battled early against a tough Highlander team that ended up going a perfect 3-0 in pool play. Highlander got two runs in the first, but Goshen responded in the home half of the frame. With two outs, Jack Gingerich was hit by a pitch. He stole second, and scored when Charles Almy reached on an error by the shortstop. Highlander added three runs in the top of the fourth, and broke the contest open with six in the fifth. Despite the loss, Goshen coach Terry Kercher was happy with the way his team battled. In the top of the seventh, one more Highlander run would have eliminated Goshen from the tournament, but Goshen was able to buckle down and get the final out to advance by a hair. “It all resets now,” Kercher said. “We can reset our pitching, and we’ll see what happens tomorrow (Sunday).” “We’re one of the four best teams in the state of Indiana,” Kercher added. “We got beat by a better team today. But we’ll come out on Sunday and see what we can do.”
