As part of the new MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement, Major League Baseball will add a second wild card team in each league. The addition will put five playoff teams in each league and add a new round of playoffs to the current format. Actually, Commissioner Bud Selig said that the two wild card teams in each league will likely play a single-game playoff to determine who advances to the postseason as we currently know it. That ruling may not be definite as of the announcement of the agreement. While I like the idea of an extra wild card team and playoff round in each league, I do not favor the one-game playoff. Playing only one game puts the entire 162-game season too much on the line for both teams in way too short of a span. Teams vying for those two positions would likely use up their best pitchers just to win the spot and then not have them available for the playoff game. At least in even a short series of three games, each team would still have a chance to use its ace. I would prefer a best-of-three series. As a real playoff fan, a best-of-five would suit me better, but that would not make practical sense. The longer series would give the division winners too much time off while awaiting the wild card series winners. That could get the pitchers used to a particular rotation schedule out of sync. The two-out-of three series would give the division winners a deserved advantage of setting their rotations for the playoffs and resting the teams without far too much time to wait. Not every fan will like having an extra playoff round regardless of how long or short. Some fans may argue that extending an already very long season even more is useless. It could even reduce some interest from fans who want the playoffs to begin and end earlier. Regardless, it appears that Major League Baseball will have the extra round likely beginning in 2012 with the question for now being how many games the wild card teams will play.Source:Barry M.
